Eliza Strauss-Jenkins (she/her) grew up in southern France and currently resides in Philadelphia.

Her artistic mediums include printmaking (of all varieties), creative writing, photography, drawing, paper mâché, fiber arts, and anything else she can get her hands on.

At Sable, I've spent a lot of my time in the Stump Hut writing - using the typewriter as my main tool to play with the layout of my poems. I drew mystical lands for abstract creatures on a large roll of kraft paper using paint markers, pencil, pastels, and even finger paints. I also spent a hilarious amount of time (in collaboration with my small but mighty cohort) dreaming up all the various ways we could honor the mythical Guinea Hen. We imagined improv wordless theater, paper mâché sculptures, and Guinea Hen themed masquerade balls... Lastly, I read, made and ate delicious meals, weeded in the rain-shine, swam in icy water, looked for rocks, shoveled manure, and laughed endlessly.

My fun fact is that I've broken my left arm twice.

Erin Gould (they/them) is an interdisciplinary artist and educator living and working on the unceeded Teqa lands currently called Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Their artistic practice primarialy moved between sculpture, performance, video, and text. At Sable, they have been reading, writing, and thinking about a developing body of work investigating the history of lace lingerine, floral feminitiy, and the colonial history of botany and botanical illustration (it makes sense, trust them).

They have been mostly enjoying the rain and moss and tall trees. If they could be any creature, they would be a juniper tree.

Jenn Eisner (they/them) is an artist from Chicago who spent their time at Sable processing wild clay, experimenting with mosaics, and carrying many buckets of rocks up from the river.

They create portraits without a camera and books without paper as a way of archiving memories and collapsing time.

Jenn loves rolling around in the grass and finding worms in the garden.

Heather Omand (they/ki) is a Queer poet, mother, and performance artist transitioning from unceded Abenaki lands in Vermont to unceded Wabanaki lands in Maine. While at Sable they worked towards a cento poem sourcing words from well known artists to develop a conversation about human divinity and mortality between a Greek goddess and a country musician. They hope it will eventually become a drag burlesque performance.

Jeanette Lynn (she/her) is a professional musician, visual artist, and teacher originally from Baltimore, Maryland.

During her time at The Sable Project, Janette is working on a new body of songs inspired by the unbound magic of love, art and nature. She's also beginning her journey with watercolor painting.

Fun fact: During "brain breaks" from creating, Jeanette loves to read mystery, thriller, and epic fantasy novels.

Erin Lynn Schweers (she/her) is from Annapolis, MD. She works in mixed media, painting, watercolor, writing, songwriting, and guitar.

Returning to Sable (she was a Sable 2016 Artist), Erin is embracing the natural energy the land surrounding her gives to her artistic practice (especially the cleansing from the river). Inspired by the abundance of birdsong, she is focusing on colorful bird paintings and writing poetry through song on her guitar.

Erin teaches art to youth at an outreach program. She loves studying integrative health and wellness while her cat bamboo sits on her lap.

Noelani Jones (she/they) is originally from Hawai'i and now lives in Washington, VT.

Noelani works in community building and is a fiber artist primarially working in weaving and natural dyeing.

Returning to Sable, I am reuniting with the river and the moon. I'm working won a handwoven net as my summer weaving fro a year-long weaving project.

Fun fact about me, after I left Sable in 2021, I enjoyed my small life outside so much I downsized to a travel trailer and moved to Vermont in January of this year.

Hunter Lee (he/him) is a multidiciplinary artist from the big-hearted small-town of Kalamazoo, Michigan. He brings with him a focus on the cyanotype process and color-reduction screen printing, and a pint jar of his favorite grain, farro <3.

At Sable, Hunter found inspiration in the coming-together of loosely-gridded human-made structured & the flora-decorated rolling green mountains. Additionally he found a real joy in cliff-jumping @ the river, cathartic communal laughter, salivatingly delicious meals, & song n dance sessions. These things also serve as inspiration.

Hunter feels most alive when he's floating in the lake watching the watery light ripples on the sand with a long drink & a bowl of farro salad waiting for him on the shore.

McLean Macionis (he/him) is an artist, composer, and educator whose solo and collaborative works live at the intersection of sound, technology, and the human experience.

While in residency at Sable, he practiced deep listening, captured field recordings, and studied solitude in the context of artistry. McLean is currently based in the Adirondacks, and he is a Professor of the Practice at Middlebury College where he teaches courses in recording and Music Production.

He discovered that the formula for extra voluminous hair at Sable is river water, algae, and a Sprinkle of Slay.

Riley McBride (they/them) is an artist and musician who was raised in South Georgia and currently lives in Brooklyn, NY.

They are writing songs inspired by the landscape and relationships built at Sable.

Their waffle house order is two eggs over. medium with two slices of bacon and a waffle covered in butter and syrup.

Sophia Larsen (she/her) is a post-disciplinary maker from the Bay Area who currently lives in Detroit, MI. Her work explores childhood, intimacy, love, family, and connection. While at Sable she worked with textiles, made drawings, played, wrote, and dug a big hole. If not in the studio you an find her swimming in the river with all her buddies.

Storm Welch (they/them) is a printmaker, "Crankie" maker, and mural painter from Richmond, Virginia. While at Sable, Storm has been working on a large woodblock print about relational care amongst forrest defenders and other movements in the U.S. and abroad.

They have been reflecting on the need for gentleness amidst a political and changing environmental climate that constantly demands urgent activism of our friends, lovers, allies, and teachers.

Storm is a triplet who loves to contra dance, play the banjo, and has aspirations of joining a roller derby team one day.

Tamar Bordwin (she/her) is a 24 year old painter, sewist, kinitter, giggler, and goat lover originally from Hastings-on-Hudson, New York.

She has spent her time so far at Sable playing with india ink, painiting the beautiful Sable compost pile en plein air, and avoiding wearing shoes as much as humanly possible.

Tamar has driven cross-country ten times and can lick her elbow! She is insanely overjoyed and grateful to be at Sable and can't wait to see what the rest of her time here brings.

Kim Desjardins (she/her) is a visual artist working in many media (clay, cool, watercolor, printmaking...) from Fairfax, VT.

Her approach to art-making is informed by her students in her elementary art classes: Play! Explore! Express! The joys of discovery and sharing keep her active as an artist. Music and sound also play a big part in inspiring her artwork.

She is the president of Vermont Art Educators Association which organizes professional development opportunities for VT teachers.

Laela Huddleston (she/her) was a Guest Artist in June. She is photographer living in Richmond, VA, originally emerged fromthe lakes and creaks of Reston, VA.

Laela's most recent body of work returns to place-based memories, submerging lens under the surfaces of personally significant bodies of water. She explored light filled interactions to capture how memory re-visualizes itself.

As a Guest Artist at Sable, she led the Artists in Residence in a cyanotype workshop, creating prints in collaboration with the land's plant matter.

When home alone, Laela can be heard belting (badly) her own renditions of Taylor Swift and Chappel Roan.

MG | RK Collective is Maya (she/they) and Rachel/RK (they/them).

We are multidisciplinary artists and best friends. We make art in whatever ways strike our curiosity. At Sable, we are exploring durational art involving movement, written words, and interactive soundscape.

Fun facts about MG|RK: RK is a certified baby whisperer, and Maya got pulled over for the first time at age 31. Maya and Rachel have been making queer-ass art together for over a decade.

Allison Wray (she/they) is a Vermont-based fiber artist, lover of life, and believer in magic.

At Sable she has been creating hand-hooked rugs as a meditation on slowness and seasonality. She loves finding the craft in every corner of her life, and when not at Sable she teaches science to children.

This year, she witnessed her first total solar eclipse and was forever changed.

Caitlin Canty (she/her) is a Massachusetts based dancer, choreographer, and filmmaker. While at Sable she rehearsed the revival of an old project on the stage, and did a lot of reading to get ready for a new project. She loves licorice.

Daisy Wiley (she/her) is an interdisciplinary, research-based visual artist from Virginia, currently based out of New York State. She has spent her days at Sable hand-grinding pigments from White River stones and transcribing bird calls. Daisy loves greeting the tiny toads that live by the Sable bathhouse.

Isabel Brown (they/them) is a multi-media maker based in Philadelphia.

They've spent their time at Sable building paper mache puppets, creating collage portraits of their favorite places on the land, and playing around a bit on their fiddle.

Isabel loves to swim and skip rocks.

Liefe Temple (she/her) grew up on the coast of Maine. She currently attends Middlebury College, studying what she loves: dance and English.

At Sable, she's been dancing and rolling around, reading, admiring, listening, pondering, sewing, and compiling a long (but non-exhaustive) list of things she's been thinking about. Liefe loves making lists!

Rhea Ramakrishnan (she/her) is a writer and educator based in Baltimore. She also does vocals for the hardcore punk band Grudge.

At Sable she has been working on a series of prose poems that explores perspectives in storytelling and fables.

Margot Chisholm (she/her) is a writer and fiber artist currently living in NYC.

A Sable 2019 Artist, Margot returned to Sable this year to work on her fiber practice, share a needle felting workshop with artists in residence, and get inspiration for her writing.

In 2023, during the Sable Alumni Reunion, Margot wrote a "Complete Guide to Flirting at Sable" which was read and thoroughly enjoyed by this cohort.

Tina Forés-Hitt (she/her) is a dancer/performer based out of Dorset in Southern Vermont.

She is a project based freelancer that goes with the flow, wherever that may take her.

Tina has been tap dancing, sewing, reading The Alchemist, networking & getting inspired by the other artists aaaaand pressing a reset button to realign her priorities AND remember the mysteries of this magical universe.

The Pandora Consort is an early music ensemble composed of young artists, Kendra Comstock (She/her) and Angie Tyler (She/They). Both graduates of the Historical Performance Masters program at the Longy School of Music, Angie and Kendra met and bonded over their love of singing early music and creating unique performances. The two have performed with the Boston Camerata, SoHIP, Newton Baroque, Ensemble 44, Seven Times Salt, the Concordia Consort, and other early music ensembles throughout New England.

The Pandora Consort aims to reimagine classical music performance with multimedia, interactive performance, and exploring historically under-represented music. The Pandora Consort is particularly interested in performing rare works by female early music composers.

In the Summer of 2022, the Pandora Consort premiered their program Vox Feminae with SoHIP Boston, which included works by Barbara Strozzi, Isabella Leonarda, Antonia Bembo, and Elisabeth Jacquet De la Guerre. This group was formed with the mission of creating accessible, modern performances of early music by supporting young artists of every medium to create relevant, innovative performances that can attract a wider audience.

In 2022, following their performance with SoHIP Boston, the Pandora Consort hosted the first ever Worlds Collide Series, bringing together Boston-based emerging musicians across all genres to create original compositions and fundraise for Massachusetts charities of their choice.

In 2023 the ensemble received a grant from the Anna Sosenko Assist Trust to perform Vox Feminae during the Boston Early Music Festival Fringe Series, and an Encouragement Award from the Mixtape Recital Series to support the development of a new program: The Witching Hour.

The name comes from the myth of Pandora’s box, and the human need to seek the unknown and echoes the mission of the ensemble to push the boundaries of what a classical concert is.

Brother(hood) Dance! brings an excerpt of their innovative dance piece "Black on Earth" to Sable's Food & Art Friday. Black on Earth is a thought-provoking Interdisciplinary performance that seamlessly integrates dance, agriculture, and technology to explore the stories of and experiences of Black farmers. This sharing will be a duet iteration of Black on Earth.

Brother(hood) Dance! are an interdisciplinary duo that seeks to inform its audiences on the socio-political and environmental injustices from a global perspective, bringing clarity to the same-gender-loving African-American experience in the 21st century. Brother(hood) Dance! was formed in April 2014 as a duo that researches, creates, and performs dances of freedom by Orlando Zane Hunter, Jr. and Ricarrdo Valentine. They are a 2020 Bessies Honoree of the NY Dance and Performance Awards, The Bessies for Afro/Solo/Man.

Brother(hood) Dance! were Guest Artists in Residence at Sable in July 2016, with exactly 8 years between their departure and return. Sable is thrilled to host them again and share their work with our community!

Alex De Luise (they/she) is a multi-media artist inspired by our connection to one another, the land, and our bodies. They are enamored with documentary and narrative storytelling, contemporary craft-making, land art, and herbalism, and believe in the healing nature of these practices.

While an intern at Sable, they filmed, photographed, and documented in order to make a video about the sweetness of Sable!

Dan Costello (he/him) is a theatre artist, musician and writer from Brooklyn, NY. He is currently working on his first full-length original musical. He spent ten days at Sable developing characters, defining narrative and mood, scripting scenes and lyrics, and writing songs. He also just picked blackberries.

Highlights and accomplishments include twelve albums of original music, touring to over 20 countries as a singer/songwriter, co-creating Yo Re Mi (yoremikids.com), devising "Forest of Feelings" for NYC Children's Theater (NYTimes Pick!), acting in various professional and community theatre productions, and teaching thousands of children across New York City. Other proud roles include Dad to two kids, partner to the greatest, and improving an old house near Bennington, VT.

Gianna Starble (they/she) is a writer and educator currently receiving their MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Idaho. Outside of writing, Gianna helps organize the Pop-Up Prose reading series and performs as a drag king in Moscow, Idaho. 

At Sable, they wrote a lot! Including a series of 100s and a short story. But mostly, they enjoyed watching cool bugs, playing drawing games with their cohort, and not knowing what time it was.

Sophie Steck (she/her) is a Brooklyn based visual artist who makes drawings, paintings and sculptures in mixed mediums.

At Sable, she spent time developing several new paintings, ideas for future pieces and the visual language of symbols that reoccur in her work. She wrote and drew, read poems by Robin Coste Lewis from "Birth of the Sable Venus" and collaborated with fellow artist in Residence, Gianna, in a writing and drawing exchange.

She makes great blackberry salad dressing and excelled at playing soccer in a skirt. She knows many games and taught several fun ones at Sable including "Killl the Fuzzy Bunny (or Protect the Rice Bowl)" and "Grass or Toast".

Isidora Liliana Muñoz Segovia, she/her, from Chile and Spain, works in interdisciplinary movement and dance.

At Sable, Isi has been working on expanding her practice MOASSE (Movement As a Seed). Her time was spent researching the questions of relationality with the land and kinship.

Fun fact: Isi thought herself as a runner but stayed sore for two days after running the Taggart Hill loop. She also loves to make pancakes for people. (They are DELICIOUS!)

Madeleine (Mad) Joinnides (she/they), from Brookhaven, NY, is an ink-based illustrator, printmaker, and handpoke artist.

At Sable, they worked towards completion of a ritual tattoo card deck, featuring arcane designs inspired by alchemy archetypes, nature, and dream states. The deck will be used in her ritual tattoo offerings where, after meditation, self-reflection, body scans, and holding sacred circle, a participant pricks a card; the card picks them.

She is grateful for the magical misty mornings drawing by the blueberries, for the kind souls and welcoming community, and the inspiring energy of creatives gathering every year to tend the land, connect with other artists, and hone their craft at Sable.

Voloz Collective is an international multi award-winning physical theater collective. They came to Sable this year to perform The Man Who Thought He Knew Too Much (a show they wrote at Sable in 2019!) and to be artists-in-residence for a week to write and create something entirely new.

Hailing from three different countries and brought together by two years of study at L’École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq, Voloz is passionate about making theatre that is fast-paced, immediate, and visceral. Rather than engaging audiences' rational brains, we ignite audiences’ imaginations with a whirlwind of images and sounds, to tell stories that can be understood emotionally before they are understood intellectually.

Voloz’s work doesn’t rely on intricate sets, sound, and lighting to tell a story, but instead utilises the body, voice, and object theatre to spark the imaginations of theatre aficionados and first-time theatre-goers alike. We have a uniquely non-hierarchical structure; all four members work collaboratively to write, direct, act, produce, and design our shows.

Berto Guido (they/them) is a dancer and multimedia artist from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. As a part of the Sable Ensemble this season they designed, built, and activated the Thunderhead character/hat/puppet. As a human in creative/collaborative process, they are practicing (and often failing at) attachment to outcomes.

Bex Love (they/them) is a clown that plays within the mediums of music, drag performance, puppetry & LIFE! They are often performing under the name content clown (@contentclown) or with the experimental band The Duck, Duck Silly Goose Parade. They are also Sable’s Community Engagement Organizer.

Emerald Peake (they/them) is a writer and visual artist. This season at Sable they are serving as Chef in Residence, preparing meals for members of the Ensemble. When not at Sable, they work as a hospital chaplain and tend a garden in West Philadelphia.

Jessica Lee (she/her) is a dancer, facilitator, and designer of systems for the people. This is her 11th summer living and working at Sable. As a part of the Ensemble, Jessica is exploring balance and investigating the questions of “What do we hold and what do we [choose to] release?” This includes balancing cups on her head. When not collaborating with the Sable Ensemble, Jessica is the organization’s Director of Operations. She is currently seeking diversified funding for Sable to sustain her work of holding space for artists and to grow Sable’s capacity for the future.

Otto Pierce (he/him) is the Founder and Creative Director of The Sable Project. He is a bridge builder, stick balancer, and apparently now writes songs. Otto is also a carpenter, pizza maker, and the lucky partner of Sara Bachman and the proud dad of Màiri Rose.

Joana Rita (she & whatever) is a transdisciplinary artist & researcher mostly based in the Iberian Peninsula. Her work is centered on practices for inhabiting damaged ecologies and imagining livable futures. She shapeshifts between theory and practice and different artistic mediums to activate magic, the sensing body and collective imagination.

At Sable, she investigated and worked on bits and pieces of an immersive performance-installation she has been developing which included playing with mirrors, setting up a loom-portal with entangled oracles for weaving and unweaving as well as sharing with other artists through conversations and deep laughter.

Joana Rita is currently pursuing a doctoral research between artistic practices, ecology and intersectional/queer feminism at the University of Lisbon.

She loves being in, with and alongside bodies of water, stargazing and sharing communal meals by candlelight.

Julia Barstow (she/her) is an image maker from Adamant, Vermont. Working in photography, poetry and dance her present curiosities attend to kinship to local ecologies and memory moving through body and land.

At Sable Julia connected spoken poems to place in wind filled installations, from the midst of winter squash vines growing over the compost pile, and out from beneath buckwheat blooms.

The first portrait Julia remembers photographing was of a beautiful crab during a brief encounter at the edge of an ocean. Julia currently lives in Adamant and Point Reyes Station, California.

Kristen Zory King (she/her) is a writer and teaching artist based in Washington, D.C. Taking her cues from the equinox and September season, Kris has spent her time at Sable ending one project (a manuscript of flash fiction stories, to be published by Stanchion in Winter 2025) and beginning a new one (a series of essays exploring nature, wonder, and the creative human spirit).

Leena Unger (she/they) is a shapeshifter, night + day dreamer, maker, aspiring tinkerer, and student of wonder based in Vermont. She/they play with puppetry, shadows, sound, and wind to tell stories.

Maia Gilmour (they/she) is a multi media maker from Vermont traversing the realms of music, theater, visual art, writing and puppetry. Their artistic practice plays with the cultivation of belief (in self, in others, in magic).

While at Sable, they worked with ancestral mythology from their Finnish lineage to create the beginning motif of a crankie/puppet show about Louhi, the Finnish witch of the underworld.

Maia was the type of kid who loved when people gathered together for the sake of creativity + music, and she still does.

Samille Ganges (she/her) is a Theatre Artist/Breathworker/Land Worker/Writer and aspiring painter and collager based out of New Orleans. Samille is also a part of an Artist Collective named Kin-gombo also based in New Orleans. She spends most of her Artistic Time acting in plays and Indie films, but has recently started sharing her writings that she calls mono-poems in front of an audience. She usually collages or water colors for herself but was excited to share that at Sable.

This is her first Artist Residency and she is thankful to Sable and her fellow artists she has shared space with.
